Quad will be used mostly on trails. He has been riding since he was young. Is a 250cc atv not powerful/fast enough?

A Honda Sportrax or TRX 250. Hands Down. They are easy to maintain, fix, get replacement parts for them, and last for ever.

Quad, if you bought him a 100 or 125 street/trail motorcycle, you could tag it and have a second means of legal transportation. Your son could also learn all of the lessons that come with owning street legal bike. It could also be used as a recreational vehicle. They will go anywhere an ATV will go. DUAL PURPOSE - STREET & TRAIL

He is 15 and probably has a good idea of what is right for him.If as you said he has been riding awhile.Just make sure that he is well equipped with safety gear and tell him not to ride alone.And I always tell people to wear a full faced helmet after witnessing what can happen if you don't.By the way it was on a atv!

Not thats not enough, im 14 and i would go for a 450yfz or a trx but a 400 is ok too

go with a Honda it is the best built quad out there great trail bike quit and smooth.

automatic tranny? thats no fun! let the boy get a nice blaster or trx400 or something of that nature.. its really not that hard to learn how to shift
