According to Costa de Loverdo, Greek mythology used symbolic language to describe real events. His theory was that the ancient Greeks battled a series of invading tribes from northwest Africa (near Carthage). The Greeks represented these invaders as Monsters.
I'm not sure if the book is in print, but you can order from your local library, and ebay has a copy for auction.

The thing about myths is... whether or not they were at one time based on fact, their purpose remains to teach us lessons.
Current events become histories... histories become legends... legends become myths... and all that remains is for the student to find the truth in such things and the lessons as applied to their own lives.
