The ones at the kiosks in the mall are crap. They are usually done in a hurry and may not even be rooted well.
I've mainly seen them being sold on the side of the road. You can try craigslist or do a search on line for a local bonsai club. Clubs usually have a yearly sale of trees and other care items to keep themselves going.
I'm not sure where you are, but I know in Houston there is a nursery that has bonsai. Mainly because the owner does so many of them, he doesn't have time to care for all of them! Basically, you want to find someone that is experienced at creating them so you will get a good one.
Beware: You cannot get a tree and just water it and expect it to do well. You will have to learn how to re-pot it and what the proper soil is and how to maintain the shape as well. Bonsai need special care.

The proper climate is necessary to keep your tree healthy. In the summer, when the sun is hot, and the soil dries out quicker, keep your tree in a partly shaded area. This will help the tree retain moisture. In the winter, do the opposite. In order to be healthy and strong, bonsai trees must be watered properly. The bonsai tree should be watered by placing the pot in a bowl of water. When all of the soil has absorbed water, bubbles will stop forming in the water, and the tree should be removed. This should be done about once a week, or as needed. Bonsai soil should never be soaking wet, but it should not be dry and crumbly either.

i dont think it would be advisable to buy them over the internet, although ive never tried.
you might find them at a garden centre, thats where i have got some of mine in the past, tho of course you wont get the same quality or variety as you would from a specialist bonsai nursery.
or you could start to grow your own! either from seed, or from small trees found in the wild (tho not from a protected area or nature reserve of course) its really very simple to start, but you will need patience as it takes several years for the trees to develop - however think of the satisfaction! there are several very handy books on the subject, or look up info online!

You're welcome to look at my website. I do all the bonsai trees that are shown on my website. They are no big mystery. First you have to decide if you want an indoor or outdoor tree. Also before you buy, read the Bonsai Care pages on my site. That is very important. You're also welcome to email me at

My trees won't die during shipping. If I thought they would, I'd never ship them. I can only send to the U.S.

go to your local nursery, but be careful to choose one for indoors and one that is easy especially if this is a new hobby for you.
juniper type bonsai trees do not do well inside, try something like a sheffalera if you can find one. good luck!

definite, you may propagate your ficus tree. the point of situation ranges from "ordinary" to "will strengthen like weeds" based on the form of ficus you have. right here is the finest approach - i take advantage of it regularly with sturdy fulfillment. you do not want any particular kit, soil or rooting hormones for this equipment. a million. %. a branch you want to alter into the hot tree. it is going to be a healthful, mature branch. not this years growth. you should use any component of the dept, you do not could decrease it off all of the in the past on the trunk. It desires to be a minimum of a few inches long so which you will take care of it. 2. decrease off the dept with sparkling (use alcohol) sharp scissors or pruners. 3. do away with approximately 0.5 the leaves on the dept. depart the final leaves - take off the decrease leaves to halfway up. 4. positioned you slicing in a tumbler field (sparkling) of water. have not got any of the relax leaves in the water - merely the stem. Use rainwater in case you have chemically dealt with faucet water. save the field crammed to this point. save it in a marvelous region - yet not finished sunlight. 5. interior of a few weeks - could be shorter or longer, numerous variables right here - you will see roots springing up in the water. 6. substantial - it's time to go the plant to soil as quickly as the roots get going. "Water roots" will exchange into "soil roots" for under a jiffy, whilst they are new. in case you nonetheless depart the roots strengthen in the water, they might have situation changing over to soil. 7. Pot your slicing up in bonsai soil in case you may - it is going to sell greater useful root growth. save the hot slicing ok watered for yet another week and mist the leaves regularly. it is been becoming in water and desires to get used to being in soil. 8. progressively decrease returned on the water and misting till it is returned to being watered like a prevalent ficus. you presently have yet another tree to start guidance. depart it on my own for a whilst, do not do any pruning or twine guidance till properly when you spot indications of growth on the slicing. it is a robust thought to do greater suitable than one slicing at a time. there is often the opportunity of failure with all propagation.

You can get them at a kiosk in the mall. It is generally good luck to get them as a gift, but I don't think you are supposed to buy them for yourself.
