I've worked with both of these and I have found that .net is much easier to work with. The actual language is very similar (java and c#) or if you already know some basic you can use Visual Basic with .net. The .net environment hides more of the software architecture complexity from you without preventing you from going there if you need to. To illustrate the point that the languages are similar, but the .net architecture is easier - I recently hired a java developer to work with c# and .net and he was productive on his first day.

Both of these platforms have specific server requirements for hosting the application. Even though php is not on your list of platforms to consider you might want to think about it. It is really common even with inexpensive hosting solutions and the language itself is very approachable. For complex applications it can get hairy, but if you use objects/classes with it, and apply a little discipline you can do a lot with it. Look at the popular vBulletin forum software for example.

I have worked on both.If the application is quite web 2.0 ish or it is for business-to-customer, rather use PHp or Ruby on rails. If you are developing enterprise application, and the enterprside for which you are building it uses Microsoft Windows heavily, then .net is best bet..And if they can afford using java, means they have apache/webshere/weblogic application server with them, then use J2EE. However, I should add Java and C# are syntatically very similar.

hey , .net is very similar to VB . so if u wanna develop complex web, then try using j2ee... u have to have some basic knowledge in java. better understand RMI first...

I had experienced both.
I am developing web and win application for 3 years with different languages such as C# , ASP.NET , Java ,JSP ,J2EE ,... .
These days .net has the best rating for usage.
.net is so easy to learn, user friendly and having more features on both win and web application.

But java is not as user friendly as .net .
You know most of web hosts are compatible with asp but a few of them are compatible with jsp and support it.

.net is easier than j2ee.if we select j2ee then we have to know about java.but if we choose .net there is no problem like this.
