Originally it was Domain Name System as defined in RFCs 882 and 883 by Paul Mockapetris. However it now refers to Domain Name Server and Service as well as system.

DNS is Stand by for domain name system / service. every web site have major two patrs : 1. Server name 2. Domain name ( with suffix) for example www.yahoo.com here yahoo is domain (netbios name) name and .com is suffix. when your query pass to dns server that read right to left fist is . call root origin of all sites, then suffix ( internet LTD for country ) if its have com then server check its com entry by hirichical and find yahoo and its realted server... for more information click on howstuff.com and search for how dns work ?

A DNS server is what your ISP uses to send you to the correct website. Whenever you surf somewhere, the DNS servers looks up the correct address, a series of numbers and dots, and sends you on your way. Obviously, this all happens very quickly and you never notice it.
