How do I get 2 players on EA Sports MVP baseball 2005?

Question

I have tried every button to activate the second controller and nothing has worked. The box says 1-2 players. The manual doesn't address two players. I am hoping to play against my son but I have no idea how to do it.

It is not a controller issue as it works with all my other games.
