I'm curious how the free Zone labs product compares to the competition in terms of the effectiveness of the firewall and virus scanner? Is it a good product or is there a better alternative.

Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) is an effective anti-virus program. No program is hacker proof, but this one is quite solid. If this is for your personal computer, you should have no problems. If you run a business, you'll want to pay for an upgraded version.

While you're at it, look at Lavasoft's "Ad-Aware" program. It removes unwanted spam, ads, cookies, and other hooks on your hard drive. It's free for personal use, but you can pay for a real-time version, if you'd like.
