The Life of Pi - Yann Martel (magical)
The Star of the Sea - Joseph O'Connor (set around time of Irish potato famine but an excellent read).
The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood (scary but thought provoking).
The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold (heart-warming)
Through A Glass Darkly - Jostein Gaardner (beautiful children's fiction that adults can enjoy).

Or classics like The Catcher in the Rye, 1984 or The Color Purple are a must - none are set too far in the past and all will make you think.

Authors I'd recommend for enjoyable, easy reading are James Patterson, Michael Connolly, Michael Cordy, Douglas Kennedy and Ian Rankin.

Hope you find some enjoyable reads honey.

Terry Pratchett for fun - start at the beginning of the Discworld series and work your way though (must be at least 30-odd now)

And for humour rather than fantasy reading try Gerald Durell, of which 'My Family and Other Animals' is probably the best known.

If you feel like something a bit more intellectual, try the full version of '1001 Nights', aka 'Arabian Nights', or Aeschylus, 'The Golden As s' (meaning 'donkey' rather than 'bottom' as Yahoo seems to think!).

For entertaining classics, give some Oscar Wilde, HG Wells and Jules Verne a go. Saki (aka HH Munro) writes good, if drily witty and socially aware short stories, and Rudyard Kipling is always interesting - not just for kids either.

Oh yes, and 'Three Men in a Boat' is good fun too!

If you're at a loss for a good book, go to www.gutenberg.org - it's a free site set up containing a multitude of books which are out of copyright, so all the classics and many good books, fiction and non-fiction from over 100 years ago, have all been transferred to their servers for anyonee's perusal - it's fantastic!

Happy reading...

It depends on the genre you want to read as well, my nephew is 16 and is having the same problem. I reccommend Hollow Chocolate Bunnie of the Apocolypse by Robert Rankin if you want a laugh and a fantasy novel or maybe even Jasper Fforde, he is good too. Brave New World by Adolus Huxley is good too, for a book that will make you think but isnt too taxing to read. If you want something in the 'streathing your mind' genre and something a bit politicial try 1984 by George Orwell (or start with Animal Farm for a quick read to see if you like Orwell as an author) bit more taxing but well worth it. I was 16 when I started first to read Graham Greene, brilliantly written and complex characters that dont drag you down. The first one I read was Brighton Rock-about gansters, very good! My nephew recently read Frankenstein (Shelly) so you may want to try that if you havnt read it and in the same vein Dracula(Stoker) is very good also. Something in the more Sci -fi genre is John Wydham, Day of the Triffids is a book I thought sounded almost so unbeliveable I wouldnt be able to read it (I mean killer plants from outta space!) but is a great novel and really enjoyable and I have since read many if his works, written in a way which makes the story so plausable you cant help but believe it! If you want something more autobiograophical (which isnt written like a autobiography) Maya Angelou is a nice read-heart warming and written about her life, it can be a be it sad but gives a great insight in to her life and times when she was growing up. I know you said you dont like books written far in the past and too be honest I didnt either but one night I picked up The Three Musketeers (Alexander Dumas) and have never regretted that descion! Its is a superb novel I was aawakw night after night reading it, I never thought I would enjoy it but I did it is written sooooo well and I have never been taken with another historical novel in the same way! Hope this helps! If I have any other pearls of wisdom I will let ya know!!

You could give "The Beach" by Alex Garland a go, it's better than the film and is quite a good read. You could try "Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold which is quite brilliant but maybe the concept is abit gorey. Probably my best advice is to go to your local library and check the shelves, if you don't go often hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised and you can take a chance and try different genres that you might not pick if you were paying for the books

A Walk to Remember- Nicholas Sparks (not at all like the movie. Much better)
Anything by Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries series, The Mediator series- my favorite of her books, 1-800-Where-R-You- newest 1 just came out, All-American Girl...)
Rebecca- Daphne du Maurier (Great romance. Love the way it is written. The movie from 1940 is awesome also.)
Anything by Melissa de la Cruz (The Au Pairs...)
Zoey Dean- The A-List Series (much better than gossip girl)
Hope this helps! I'm a 17 yr old girl, & I'm also running out of stuff to read. It's hard to find good books nowadays, most people like movies more than books, so less books come out. Good luck!

Define "far past" you're only 16...

Libba Bray's "The Great & Terrible Beauty" and the sequel "Rebel Angels" (silly name, but better than the first book). They are set in late Victorian London and are young adult fantasy.

If you want something very meaty and you don't mind a bit of violence Roger Ellory's "Ghostheart" (then, if you like his writing, try the others). That's set in the USA and covers 1960s to the present, definitely for adults, but if you read a lot I'm sure you can cope.

Isabelle Allends is a great female writer and all her works are translated ; there is a very good short story of hers called '' And of clay we are created '' ( i am not sure of the title but the title have the same meaning) in this story she put fictional characters in it and it is based on a news event in, 1985 where a great volcanoe erupted in Mixsico and many people were burried under the boggs.

The Indian mythology books are also great especially the ones which talk about Budda and the Indian nine planets.
