I have 20 year old brass door hinges that work fine but they have a lot of black grease buildup. How can I remove the grease and polish them. I don't want to go through the hassle of replacing all of the hinges. thanks

If you can remove the hinges, or just take one at a time off. I read in This Old House Magazine, that you could boil them in an old crock pot. The heat and the water will clean all the grease from them. You can then shine them, and put them back. Possibly with a little WD40, to make sure that they work without binding.

if you don't want to take the doors off to clean them, try using a solvent on them to cut through the grease - white spirit might do it, or cellulose thinners. then wipe them down with a soapy rag to remove the traces of solvent before polishing with brasso or similar brass cleaner.
another alternative would be to clean the old grease off with something like wd40 or 3-in-1 oil, which would remove the grease but keep the hinges oiled and running smoothly. then as before clean off the excess with a soapy cloth before polishing.
good luck!

I have used a product named Goo Gone. It seems to remove all kinds of greasy substances. Test it before getting too aggressive to see if it damages the brass finish.
