Portable document format. Can be open by Adobe Acrobat Reader, a free software. Can be generated by Acrobat distiller, latex, and other systems. As the name suggests, it has greater chances to appear the way you like on different platforms, rather than the Word documents.

PDF stands for portable document format. You'll need acrobat reader from adobe to read PDF documents. One of the advantages of pdf document is you cannot change the content and it's small in file size.
