People invent things when they have to- the circumstances of their life, previously comfortable, call for some solution, and a new invention is born.
Thomas Edison would never have invented the lightbulb if his brother didn't always lock him in the closet.

Most great inventions were created by people who saw a great need for something at the time. The light bulb -- the need for lighting inside the house, etc.
But it also holds true in other ways. When you are just doing something in your daily world, and you don't have something you need to accomplish a task, don't you "make do" with something else?
I have hammered nails with the edge of a rock! Or the end of a screw driver, because I didn't have a hammer. In other words, when you have a need for something, you can create or invent an alternate way to get the job done!

People invent things because they have a necessity--a need. So therefore, if they don't see a need for something, it is not invented.
This is the origin of such a saying.
Nowadays, many people's perception of "necessity" is completely altered.
We don't need 90% of what we have.

Because ppl invent things that other ppl need. If no one could use the invention, then why would we invent it? The need to make life better / easier / simpler is the motivation behind invention.

Plato first said that.
It means that having a need for something inspires people to create or invent things to solve that need.

when a need for something arises, andthere is nothing there to fill that need, often that causes someone to put the thought necessary to fulfill that need, hence, a new invention.

the more important it is to accomplish a task, the more likely it is that a way will be created (invented, whatever) to do it.
