I'm not sure how old he is but you should research New England. The Salem witch trials would be good place to start but it might also be a good time for him to investigate the Puritan influence on these stories and their origins.

He could research the Jersey Devil, and knowing that these stories are mostly for "fun" he could research the origins of John Ketcham (Spelling? also related to Salem) and his link to modern day ghost stories surrounding Amityville, NY.

I know you know this but as a mom I'm going to say it anyway...be careful of what you allow him to read. Most ghost stories stem from real life tragedy and some of these things may be too much for him to comprehend depending on his age.

I lived in a house that had a ghost of a child. The child died in a house fire as we later found out.
When I was getting ready to move from that house a friend of mine was helping me and the ghost asked him "What are you doing here?". There were some other things that have happened while I live there, but the ghost had not spoken before to any one.

I used to live in a house dating back to the civil war and it used to house slaves in it. In is haunted to this day. In the back yard one of the trees was used to hang a man that was caught stealing and was hanged ther he was not the one stealing the one that was doing it was the kid of the houses owner. All this I know from a reading and a paranormal team come in.
