Probably because you're video card drivers are not updated or installed.
To make sure about the performance of your video card, you should download benchmarking utilities such as 3DMark2001. They can show what your video card is capable of and how fast they would perform.

Right, check that the driver is installed.
Minimize all open windows, you should see your computer background wall paper.
Right click, and choose Properties, Settings.
On this dialog box, should be a drop down box for "color settings"
Use the drop down box to check the number of colors.
The box beside it should show the screen resolution.
You should be able to select millions of colors or ( 24 or 32 bit resolution). And you should be able to resize your screen to 1024x768 and much larger.
If these options are grayed out, then you have not installed your video card drivers. Get the disk, and read the install instructions.
I included a link to the GeForce 5500 Nvidia driver. But try your disk first.
On the site, click primary download.
I dont think you have to register.
There is a link at the top you can click if the download doesnt start right away.

Actually there's little difference between the two. (Extremely hard finding benchmarks for both though).

The 5500 should be better, but not much in games, you will not notice a difference at all (after all it's NOT a gaming card). You would really need a large upgrade to notice a difference in today's games.

Dont pay interest to BOSTER dont get ATi. keep on with Nvidia. See look in any respect his spelling mistakes, thats what occurs once you purchase a 4870. Get a better moderen Card guy, you'd be lots happier. I basically were given the GTX 260 and its incredible.
