This is similar to converting degrees, minutes and seconds in angle measurement.
There are 12 months in a year. Now, 1 month is 1/12 of a year and 10 months are 10/12 = 5/6 of a year
so 1 yr 10 mo = 1 + 5/6 yr = 1.8(3) yr
5 : 6 = 0.8(3)

1 year = 12 months. Add 10 months to get the total number of months(22). Divide by 12(months in a year) to get the answer( it is between 1.6 and 1.9 ) I know the answer, but you should do some of the work!

How many months are in a year? There are 12.
So you have 1 and 10/12 years.
12/12 + 10/12 = 22/12
so plug 22/12 into your calculator and get 1.8333 years

That is using the gregorian calendar, there is a calendar system called the Julian calendar. This is used extensively in Computing due to the simplicity of incrementing and decrementing for dates.
Look for applications to convert dates, if you are writing an application there are standard function modules to convert dates as it is a simple mathematical formula.
