a baby should be breast fed or formula fed for one year. they need the iron, and cow's milk doesn't provide it. also, they have found that giving a baby cow's milk before the age of 1 increases their chance of juvenille diabetes. so, if you can hold out until a year that would be the best. the best way, i have found, of weening the baby is once the baby turns a year old start giving sippy cups of milk during the day and only nursing at naptime and at night time. then, eventually only at night time. then, make sure they have a nice big supper with a nice glass of milk (cow's). it's much easier than just taking them off completely and it kind of knocks out the whole bottle thing.

You should stop whenever YOU feel YOU should. That could be next week or next year, totally your choice. Sometimes babies wean themselves and sometimes you have no other choice due to work and so on. As for how to stop, pick a feed of the day that is the least important to the baby (usually afternoon ones) and replace it with formula feed (you can give whole milk if the baby is over a year). Do that for a couple days, then pick another feed and do the same for a couple more days. This slow transition will help you ease into it especially, so you don't get too uncomfortable and your breasts have a chance to adjust. If you find you get too engorged, don't pump too much, just express some to aleviate the pressure. Or wait a couple extra days before dropping an another session, since it's supply and demand your body will adjust itself. Good Luck !

My Family doctor says that newly born babies should be breast fed upto 2 yrs of their age. When the children are more than 1 year of age.. start from a very small quantity of bottled milk so that it doesn't hurt the baby's digestive system and slowly as the baby adopts it, stop the breast feeding and give'em the bottled milk :) But Still you can ask for suggestions from your nearest paeditrics specialist.

Breastfeed for as long as you can. It still provides your baby with wonderful benefits beyond a year. When you do decide to stop, do it gradually. If your baby is under a year old, then you will have to change him/her over to formula; drop one breastfeed and exchange it for a bottle feed, then continue this for a few weeks until your baby is completely changed over.

However, if you really don't need to stop breastfeeding, try to stick it out for the whole year, that way you can change bubs over to solids and not have to worry about formula.

I breastfed my first for two years, and to wean her I just dropped a feed every few months; by the end I was down to two, one in the morning and one in the evening.

Start slowly weening off your baby, and for your sake too. The pain in your breasts can be really bad...You can ask your obs/gyn to give you something to dry up, but I don't know if that will ease the pain in your breasts.. I ended up binding my breasts so movement wouldn't make them bounce to much... And for your child, either give him a bottle inbetween or a sippy cup to help him with the separation and bond he or she has with you when breastfeeding... you may not necessarily feel the discomfort I did. Good luck!!

You should stop whenever you feel comfortable stopping.

When you go to stop, it's easier to night ween first. Your baby can be introduced to sippy cups now and when you decide to ween just cut out one feeding every other day. You'll be able to step down gradually so your breasts don't become engorged and the baby will not be as upset.

Ideally, you could continue until your child weans himself.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that you continue nursing until your child is at least 12 months old.

The longer you breastfeed, the more benefits you and your baby will receive.
