I have the opportunity to visit Kenya (and possibly Cape Town and JBurg) in late March. I am wondering if this is a good time to go especially as it relates to (1) weather and (2) going on safari and seeing animals. Does anyone have experience with Africa at this time of year? Please let me know. Thanks!

March 21 is the officially recognised date for the start of the rainy season in East Africa. Summer begins December, so by March you will be witnessing the end of Summer. Most animal at this time will be in Tanzania, particularly the world famous Serengeti. They begin their journey back to Maasai Mara towards the end of July.

However, both Masai Mara (which is at the tip of Serengeti in Tanzania) and the actual Serengeti have parmenent dwellers. From my own experience, Serengeti is by far not only more beautiful and has more animals but also 90 times bigger than Masai Mara of Kenya.

Mombasa and the whole coastal region of Kenya is where you can find beaches. The ony problem is that they are overcrowded. If you do not mind that then go. Otherwise, you can go to Zanzibar in Tanzania where the beaches are more bautiful and more clean, but also less crowded.

You should go & you will love it!!!

My two favourite countries! I could tell you loads...

Kenya is great for safari and I know that some tours cross border to Tanzania if you want to see that part of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. I had a wonderfull guide to the Masai Mara called Isaac. You can contact him on wildconnectionsafaris@yahoo.com . They will be able to answer any questions.

Most ppl forget that they will be stuck in a vehicle on safari so don´t book more than 4-5 days for one tour!

The rain season starts somewhere in March but as it just starts you should be fine. Check on weather http://www.africanmeccasafaris.com/kenya/guide/kenyaclimate.asp

The only problem with the rains is that if you want to go diving the visibility will be affected and many diving places shut. I went to Watamu for diving and loved it. Contact www.diveinkenya.com/index.htm for advice.

South Africa will be still summery in March. Cape Town is the nicest of the cities and you can go on Wine Tours and to Simon Town to see the penguins. Rather than going to Joburg I would do a Garden Route tour along the Coast. There are nice places and lots of activities to do. Backpacking SA is super easy and host hostels are really nice. Good luck & Enjoy Africa!!!

May be it is too hot for you, there, in the summer months. You might be sweating all the time. Climate there is humid in general and adds heat in summer.
It is OK if you are used to such weather already.
Take care, and enjoy
