It all depend's on the situation and circumstances.Usually the wake is held within a day or two of the person passing. But sometimes it is postponed for several day's due to waiting for family to beable to fly in and get to the area in which the person passed.Like with my mom she passed away on july 1 but we did not have her wake until july 7 because we had to wait for all my brothers and sisters to get there.I hope this helps and i am sorry for your loss.

Wakes were started to make sure the person who died was truely dead. So , it starts right after the persons passing. In days past the wake would start after the person was placed in the parlor of ones home. Flowers were placed to cover the smell of a love ones passing. This usually last about a week. Then after everyone has arrived to pay their last respects then the person would be placed in a coffin for burial .

There isn't an esact time when the wake begins...you will realize and "wake" when you are ready to let go of the person. It all depends on you, how much you loved them and how long it will take you to let go. Everyone is different in these situations...there is no right or wrong answer!
