It's "drub" believe me. I put the clue and the word with missing letters in on www.oneacross.com. It came up "drub" and that thing is usually never wrong.

Drub, but nowadays it's almost only used in the phrase "a drubbing".

Well, you can always Deck someone . Or daze them, a sharp sturdy blow. But, the meaning of severley beat, is thrash.
