When I was 18 I got caught stealing about $350 dollars worth of odd and end stuff. I paid restitution to the police office for it and was never actually charged or even arrested. Would this stil show up on a criminal background check?

probably not. It appears that restitution was agreed to in lieu of prosecution. What this means is exactly what you said, you never actually was charged/convicted of any offense because you paid the money back.

I hope that others reading this will see how one mistake like this can have lasting effects on their lives. It could haunt you forever. So, please, think before you act.

If the restitution was a judgement - ordering you to pay - yes, it will show up.

Why would you pay the police officer? Did you go to court?
