An operating system does 4 major things:
INPUT
PROCESS
OUTPUT
STORAGE
Input - Raw data is placed into a system
Process - The Data is manipulated to be converted to Information
Output - The information is presented in a format the user can understand
Storage - Information and data can be saved in a system to be retrieved
As a result of all of the above, Feedback can be introduced which is a HUMAN factor. A user will react to the output and alter
the input.
Other benifits of an operating system are:
To allow for a manual and basic interface (Simple to use)
Must be able to perform automated tasks
Must be able to run independantly
* Note this is an answer expected at A/S Level ICT as to the purpose of an operating system.
As Snook clearly stated most users wouldn't be able to use a pc without an operating system.
