Ok long story short...I had an abnormal pap smear and doctor wants me to come in for colposcopy/biopsy in few days. I know what could cause an abnormal pap, but why have a colposcopy(not colonoscopy), what are they trying to rule out specifically? Cervical cancer? If it was something like HPV would they even ask for a colposcopy?

I had a colposcopy when I was 17 because of an abnormal pap. They found 3 places that were cancerous. (after a biopsy) I then had cryotherapy and the spots are gone and I am cancer free.

A PAP smear is simply a screening test. The colposcopy will just help to give your doctor/NP a better idea of what might have caused the abnormal pap smear. If he/she performs a tissue biopsy, he/she can give you an even more exact answer. It's also important to discuss with your doctor/NP exactly what is up with your PAP. I mean, there is a HUGE difference between dysplasia (abnormal cells that if left alone could *potentially* develop into a cancer ... these don't even always have to be treated) and cervical cancer. I cannot tell you how often patients have been told they have cancer when that is not the case AT ALL. If I was a betting woman (which I sometimes am ... ), I'd say that, at most, you will have a dysplasia. However, as someone already said, just about any abnormality you could have can easily be treated. My biggest suggestion for any woman with an abnormal PAP is to find a provider you trust and follow-up as he/she recommends. Take care --- you will be A-OK, so don't worry too much! :-)

RELAX! You will be fine. They are just checking for cancerous tissues and even if they find some, they can get rid of them and you will be good to go.

It happens to all women at least once. Don't sweat it!
