and what message do they send to the world?

the majority of pop music in my mind is shallow, mindless drivel. It's meant to appeal to the masses, is formulaic, calculated and intended to make money for record companies. The message that it sends to the world is that our society is shallow, tasteless and voyeuristic. I'll cite "My Humps" as an example.

the positive thing is that someday, the musicians grow up and become worthy contributors.. my example here would be John Mayer. From his first releases to his current stuff, he has grown tremendously. Thank god he had the balls not to record another "your body is a wonderland"! I'm sure his record label would have loved it, though.
