I don't understand why it's so slow, despite the fact that I'm not downloading anything else on any other programs. Just checking my mail and opening one or two internet browser windows.

Thanks.

The file I'm downloading has 2000+ seeds and 3000+ peers.

By the way, how do I open my port?

512 kbps is your bandwidth. You will be lucky if your speed can reach 100kbps. Moreover, ISPs today are throttling torrent traffic, so it will definitly be slow...

You may need to check that your firewall isn't blocking the port utorrent uses. Also if you use a router you may need to set up port forwarding. Take a look at http://www.portforward.com to find out how to set this up.

Another problem could be the number of seeds/peers sometimes a torrent is no longer active.

Torrent programs measure the speed in kilobytes per second too but your BB connection is kilobits per second mening the BB speed is really 64 kilobytes per second you will never get the full top speed though due to network overheads.

alright..to cover everything for u(cos others have answered about the possibilities where its no fault of utorrent) i'll assume u are downloadin from a really active torrent, high seed count. the thing is, i have had the same problems with utorrent. i have tweaked the download speed as suggested by someone else. it did not help. i also changed the port number to the port azureus uses, it still did not help(azureus was not running). but when i downloaded the same file with azureus, it was downloadin at 41KBps(my speed was also 512kbps). i can only conclude that utorrent is not all that good as it has compatibility problems with the firewalls and stuff we have already installed.

--that DOES slow it down, but very little
check that ur port is open, as if it isnt the uttorent cant connect properly to the servers
also, the torrent may be old and not being seeded

the above two answers is 100% right, but you can check your utorrent program properties, in the download menu you can increase the rate of downloading

torrents only download at the rate that other people will share the file... you can do nothing but wait im afraid
