I'm curious. I've spent three years around Europe and there is a general dislike for Americans. Could any one tell me why and what started this?

The American Revolutionary War...followed by every war the US has been involved in since.

Most people hate the guy (or girl) at the top.

America was first settled not so much for Christians looking for religious freedom but from prisoners in other countries. When the prisons in Britian or France became full, they put them on a boat and dropped them off in America. The story has been twisted and exaggerated to make it seem as if all Americans have loving, Christian heritage but it isn't true. Most Americans have ancesterial roots that lead them into prison for mass murder and unspeakable rape.

Now we are an arrogant bunch of people for having such humble beginnings. Generally speaking, we are rude, unthoughtful and demanding like a baby wanting a bottle. Its hard to like an overgrown, spoiled, undisiplined baby. Americans are like giant babies who if they don't get what they want, when they want are going to hit someone and since they are so huge physically, they can do a lot of damage to the world at large. Our demands are none-the-less selfish and thoughtless. Like a baby, they think they are the only ones that matter and make a lot of noise when their demands aren't made.

Americans need to grow up! The world pretty much hates us and that's not surprising at all. We just don't know how to get along with people peacefully.

It's not only Europeans that hate Americans, you'll find hatred around the world and if US government doesn't change the way it treats other countries that might flip turns the table.
Let's take an example, the 11th of September attack on terrorism America. if you do remember, president Bush started a war on , and what did he achieved, more violence and blood all around the world, and anyone who disagrees with him, he sorted him with to terrorist, then war on Iraq, and .. and .. and .
And for me .. I hat America.

It's a clash of cultures that's all. In the UK we are more reserved, humble and have a really dry wit. I am referring ONLY to the stereotype of Americans when I say that they are associated with being vulgar, loud, obnoxious and a bit slow. It goes against all our values here. I have met some Americans who are well mannered and engaging but mostly I've met people who reinforce the stereotypical view. When people think of Scotland, they always think bagpipes, tartan, whiskey etc but I don't really care what people think. I don't let stereotypes bother me. Popularity isn't important. What is important is that I like myself, don't care much for other people and their opinions.

The American culture doesn't seem to be very well understood.

All politics aside, Americans are loud, they (we) tend to flaunt money, we have unrealistic expectations of the rest of the world and often lack respect for the countries we grace with our presence.

My advice, learn French and don't admit to being an American when abroad.

You can find trashy people anywhere. The Europeans I hung out with liked Americans and appreicated the fact that there are cemetaries full of American soldiers who died for their freedom.
Guess maybe you need to look at what kind of people you are around..

I understand what you mean. I found myself treated harshly in France & Britain, especially in the restaurants and shops.

But to answer your question, it's Manifest Destiny.
