I used to, wet them and rub with a bar of Vanish soap, don't use detergent as it will fade them. Take out the laces and put them in an old pillowcase. Use a short wash.

i have converse boots too and its chuck taylor...
i often get uncomfy to see it very dirty...but i believe other chemicals may ruin it and im not that kind of a laundry person, so all i do is rub it with a rag wet with water but squeezed....
so i guess that could remove the dirt safety but requires a lot of effort...
good luck=]

OMG NO!!
Please don't do that
Use a brush and a mild cleansing detergent and scrub it clean. Not too hard or the fabric will be ruined from abrasion.
