A mix really. The competition is to find who has the best answer, and there are ways of getting that best answer. But mainly it's a place to help others- with a slight competitive edge.

I take it as a place to help others and to be helped by others. There are way too many participants to take it as a competition.

Probably both,
You answer beacause you would like to help someone,
But at the same time, you want to answer MORE accurate or convincing to get the Best Answer.
This is the logic that made Yahoo Answers a great place to ask a a question.

Some people look at it as a competition, I look at it as a place to help others and in some cases, inform the misinformed or uninformed.

Y! Answers is great way to communicate with the world. I enjoy it to answer the questions here and to ask something I really interesting in certain moment. It's so amazing, best way to enter tine yourself and people on the net. So, to me it's more a place to help somebody and sometimes to get a various , different answers on my questions. Just one problem remains always- I have not enough time to be here often. Somewhere I would like to check myself.
