An acoustic bass guitar is still a bass guitar.

As a former teacher, I strongly recommend that you find a qualified teacher to get you started. There are books and DVDs available, and plenty of "starter" lessons available on the internet (many for free), but a teacher can help you avoid bad habits and make more rapid progress. Go for it!

Yes the only difference is the spaces and the strings. I advice you to have a low cost bass guitars. So that you could practice even better than a acoustic 6 string guitar.
