An acoustic bass guitar is still a bass guitar.
As a former teacher, I strongly recommend that you find a qualified teacher to get you started. There are books and DVDs available, and plenty of "starter" lessons available on the internet (many for free), but a teacher can help you avoid bad habits and make more rapid progress. Go for it!

Yes the only difference is the spaces and the strings. I advice you to have a low cost bass guitars. So that you could practice even better than a acoustic 6 string guitar.

buy the book "Learning Electric Bass" by David Overthrow...
that's the book i am using...
but learning the normal guitar would help so u can learn the basic notes...
u can learn on acoustic also,,but it's kinda rare to find acoustic basses and they are often semi-electric already...
