1024MB=1GB sometimes quoted as 1000MB=1GB which is one of those inaccuracies (like the word "microchip" for microprocessor rather than a McCain product) that has become "fact". But.............. When you are referring to disk drive sizes then size can matter. It very much depends on whether the formatted or unformatted size is quoted. So what may be a 40GB drive unformatted is only a little more than 37 and a bit or less by the time it is formatted. Caveat emptor.

1024

A byte is a unit of measure for digital information. A single byte contains eight consecutive bits.

A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes, not one thousand bytes as might be expected. This odd number results from the fact that computers use binary (base two) math, instead of a decimal (base ten) system.

1MB is 1,024 kilobytes, or 1,048,576 (1024x1024) bytes, not one million bytes. Again, this number results from the fact that computers use binary math.

Similarly, one gigabyte (GB) is 1,024MB, or 1,073,741,824 (1024x1024x1024) bytes. A terabyte (TB) is 1,024GB; 1TB is about the same amount of information as all of the books in a large library, or roughly 1,610 CDs worth of data.

A petabyte (PB) is 1,024TB.
An exabyte (EB) is 1,024PB. A zettabyte (ZB) is 1,024EB. And finally, a yottabyte (YB) 1,024ZB.

1024 mb is truly 1 gb but... in common usage is used to mean 1000 mb. there's even been lawsuits filed over apple's claim that the 30 gb ipod is truly a 30 gb. when you hook it up to your computer you'll see that even though it's 30,000 mb it's actually 27.4 gb and not 30 gb...
