I own a tiny small field/plot behind my house in East Anglia, only about 150 yards by 70. Right now it's just rough meadow but good soil. I wonder how much asparagus could eventually be grown each season on this plot. Although I grow asparagus in the vegetable plot, I don't know whether I can just multiply this up pro-rata. Any advice would be appreciated. There must be a commercial grower out there! Thank you.

Asparagus grows well in the UK and its much more tasty than when its grown in a hotter climate. The main growing area is around Evesham, Worcs which is fairly frost free. Average yields are about 2.2 tons/Ha which means that your plot of about 0.85 Ha should produce somewhere around 1.8 Tons. At £9600 a ton - that's worth over £17,000. Obviously that's your gross sales and you have to take all your planting, growing and marketing expenses from that figure.

Can't really answer your question, but the Gain Report (2003) is quite interesting (weblink below) : 'UK commercial production is monopolised by green varieties; purple and white varieties have been trialed in the past with little success.' But beware - will it be worth the effort?! Here's an excerpt from a Government Hansard report (12 Jul 2005 Column 194WH) : "Another interesting niche market is asparagus. One of the farmers who is growing asparagus and selling it directly, has found that the bashed-up fragments are much better than the high-quality stuff, because people buy them for soup. Sometimes he has to bash up his good-quality asparagus just so that he can sell it for soup." !!

I used to pick asparagus in Roudham, near East Harling, East Anglia. The plot is just off A11. I remember the spacing being about 30cm.
I have no idea if they still grow it there. Maybe you could take a look if you live nearby.

The problem for growing asparagus is not only the climate, but especially the soil. What's seems to be good soil for other things doesn't automatically need to be good for asparagus. Check this before making further plans.

With all the new 'bio-fuels' maybe you would be better growing something that could be used to power a car... there is suppose to be a large sum of money in it.. i dont know.. just a sugestion
