context ; the situation of a happening that results in an action. try this,
if 'pretty' describes looks then it means good looking or cute.
if pretty is used before an adjective, it means fairly.
if pretty is used before words like close or near it means almost.

hope it helped : )

Basically, the meaning will depend on how the word is used in a sentence. Pretty close, means almost, pretty well, fairly, and these two terms are almost interchangeable. One might say a pretty girl, in which the word means attractive, though this is an adjective because it describes a noun. Pretty awful, which sounds a bit wierd translates into very awful.
To English speakers, these things are pretty obvious, but understandably difficult when attempting to learn English.

Well pretty is just another work for quite. You can use it in a few ways. e.g. She looks pretty - here pretty means beautiful/good looking (this is the second meaning of pretty).

Then pretty can mean quite, or almost... . e.g. Your homework was pretty bad - this means that your homework wasnt that good.

There are no such "grammatical" points, and pretty is almost a slang word. Just that when you use it before a noun (example 2) it usually means quite, and when you use it after a noun, (example 1) it means beautiful

And if you dont understand this dont worry, as pretty is not a word we always use in English, and there are always other words you can use, such as fairly

The use of the word pretty depends on the context in which the word is used. I'm not sure if "context" is the answer your teacher is looking for, or if context is even considered a grammatical point, but that's how I (as an english speaker) distinguish its use.
