I'm looking at buying a new laptop, I've found 2 that look good. 1 has a 2ghz processor (centrino duo) but only 1 Gb ram. The other has 1.83 ghz but 2 Gb ram. Which would run faster/better?

You are not going to notice the difference from 1.83 to 2 ghz in processor speed. Unless one has the Centrino Duo and the other does not. That processor adds quite a bit more speed. If they both offer you the Centrino Duo, go with the one with more RAM.

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you plan to use it as an office computer and occasionally games, then go with the first one - 1Gb RAM is a fair amount.
But if you plan to do video editing, graphics rendering or simulations of any kind - go with the second. 2 Gb RAM will make a lot of difference.
However, the difference in speed is not that great. If I were you, I'd search the net and try to find a comparative test between this processors and see exactly how much they differ. If the difference is minor, better to have more RAM.

I'd go with the better processor initially, upgrading memory in a aptop in the future is easier than upgrading the processor.

The memory would make it run faster though. is the 1.83GHz processor a centrino duo too?

It's the front system bus that will determine which one will run faster. The one with the faster FSB, will run your programs faster.

The one with 2 GIG RAM will be better for multitasking programs. On the whole, processor speed does not matter. The processor speed is just how fast they are capable of running. However, front system bus is what determines how fast your computer runs.

It rather relies upon on what you will do; in case you attempt to play video games, the greater advantageous video card on the decrease gadget would desire to equivalent relating to a similar simply by fact the different workstation simply by fact the slower processor could have a greater sturdy time. in case you could improve the processor, i could decide for the slower one, different sensible that's recommended to purely get the greater advantageous processor and ram.

Yes, I'd go for the one with the faster processor. 1gb should be enough for everything but the most memory-hungry applications. If push comes to shove, you should be able to upgrade your RAM at a later stage (try www.crucial.com for a free recommendation)

1GB ram is sufficient for most people. As you didn't state that you would be doing anything unusual (e.g. heavy graphics work) then 1GB is going to be fine for you.

Watch out for processor speeds as they are not a metric to rely on to compare processors. Instead, try an internet search for processor reviews and comparisons.

the 1.83 processor lack of memory slows your computer down better to have more memory

they both would run fine but if your programs are pigs then no matter what your system will be a little slow.i would stick with the 1.83 ghz

It depends how memory hungry the applications you're running are. If it just for general use then either of those are fine.

I'd go for the first one myself.
