I was 12 or 13 when I had my first period; it was after gym when the girls changing rooms were flooded so we were getting changed in the gym, I could feel something warm and wet so knew what it was and confirmed it in the bathrooms later on, so I changed with my back to the wall so no one would see any blood – not the best time.
Teyana23 is right, you do normally follow the same pattern as your mother and 13 is the average age for a girl to start menstruating, you might want to talk to your mother to see when she started, make sure you have pads and plan celebrations for when you get your period, like a day of shopping or a sleep over with your girl friends.
Tampons are not good for vaginal health, they prevent normal vaginal cleaning, dry out vaginal walls, give bacteria a place to multiply and introduce chemicals into your vagina, for young women like yourself the risks of infection and TSS are greater because you don't have the same antibodies as adults and the mucosa (skin) of your vagina and vulva is more sensitive.
You have a lot more options than just tampons or pads, I'd highly recommend you stick with pads or free-flow options until you are old enough to make an educated choice on whether-or-not you want to use internal menstrual options, if you do want to use something internal then I would highly recommend you use menstrual cups as they are a lot safer, more hygienic, more comfortable and more convenient than tampons. With cups you also wouldn't have to worry about your period in school as you can leave cups in for up to 12 hours, also at night, while playing sports or put them in before your period even starts, so you don't have to worry about blood getting on your underwear at all.
I would defiantly say to carry pads with you at school, cloth pads, homemade pads organic pads are best to use because they are healthier for you and the environment, alternatively if you get your period in school you can always just layer your clothing (free-flow layering) or use toilet paper wrapped around your underwear until you get home.
It is difficult to say how it feels, it is something you get used to, you might experience menstrual cramps – not everyone gets these, and most women who do can easily prevent them with diet changes or using something as simple as herbal tea – there are also other things you might learn to notice. For example when my period is due my breasts get bigger and more sensitive, my sense of smell is stronger, my skin is more sensitive to touch – everyone is different, again this is something you learn the longer you have your period. You'll probably notice the actual blood flow, this will feel similar to discharge but it tends to feel warmer and a lot wetter.

Young women typically follow the same path as their mothers. You might want to ask her how old she was when she got her first. She might have been a bit older. Either way, it's really nothing to worry about unless you haven't received it before the age of 16 and are not an athelete.
To be on the safe side, 13 is a ripe age. I would start carrying a pad or tampon in your purse just in case.
As for how it feels, it's different for every woman. What I feel isn't necessarily going to be what you will feel. Your first period might be very light, and you may not have any cramps, bloating, or mood swings at all. But, you will know when it starts. You'll feel a wetness.

I was actually 9. ^^;;; i feel so weird now that everyone is saying 13. But really it just depends on the girl. When you're meant to get your period you'll get it. And it won't be a regular period for a very long time. Mine didn't start regulating until a year ago and I'll be 22 this year. I suggest wearing pads if you are a virgin, because some tampons could hurt a bit if you were to wear them.

I got mine yesterday and I'm 13 too. You should bring pads or tampons to school (depending which one you are more comfortable in) and also bring an extra pair of underpants just in case of an unexpected leak.
Well, I didn't feel anything when it came - since I was asleep when it came. But it felt "wet" down there.

I was the last girl I knew to get mine. I was 12. You don't need to carry anything around just yet unless it makes you feel more comfortable. I had no clue when it was going to start the first time.

It feels like you involuntarily had a little accident. Sometimes you don't even know it. For me, I was 11. My mom had taken my brother, sister, and I to Hardees as she did every Friday after work. I had been having a stomachache all day (cramping that I didn't know of until after wards) and when I went to the bathroom, noticed some blood. My sister came in to check on me, and I told her to get mom. My mom came in, I told her what happened, she took a pad out of her purse. There was a woman who worked there and knew me well. My mom embarassed the life out of me when we walked out. She says "She finally got it!!" With this huge smile on her face. The woman says, loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear "You're a WOMAN now!!!!" I wanted to DIE. :))

13 I think if you are worried keep pads in your bag. you may find you get a belly ach before hand but that is not always the case another sign can be sesitive breast or niple. talk to your mom about it you will show other signs of development before your periods start.

its ok be happy that you dont have your period its a pain in the butt. well you usually get it around the time of your mom so ask her. If you are skinny and very athletic you will probubly get it later than most girls. But thats fine. Be thankful that you dont have cancer or something. Also go to beinggirl.com it has some great info.
