Ok I build custome computers and mostly gaming. here is alist of things to look for hope it helps
1st ( PROCESSOR TYPE )
either AMD or Pentium. I like AMD for gaming so I would recommend nothing lower then a AMD 64bit 3500 + processor. Even go with something higher if you can afford it like the 3800+ or even 4000 +.
2 ( Mother board )
I liked the Asus Delux MB, Make sure your front side Bus is high, Nothing lower then 1000 mhz and make sure it has nice features like it can be over clocked. Also make sure the it can run up to 2200 mhz.
Also make sure that it can hold atleast 2 gig of DDR memory double Data Rate memory with the freaquency/speed of the memory being 400 mhz.
Also make sure that your MB has a thing called Flash BIOS. This means you can Update your bios right online.
3 ( DDR double date Rate or what people know as physical memory Or what We all know it by is RAM)
Make sure you get Duel memory, Double Date Rate memory and that the memorys speed is 400mhz. Now their are newer types like DDR2, DDR3 and if you go with Pentium you want Rambus Memory also with a high freaquency.
4 ( HARD DRIVE )
If you go with a regular hard drive which is going to be IDE then make sure you get a minimum of 120gig, but I would go with 200 gig and that it spins at 7200 rpm. That is the fastest spin for an IDE Hard drive.
If you can afford more money then I recommend going with an SATA (Serial ATA ) This hard drive can spin UP TO 15,000 rpm and is litterally 3 to 4 times faster then a IDE HD when it comes to fetching your information.
5 ( Video Card )
Heres is a tricky one . This depends on your Mother board. You can either buy a mother board that either has an AGP slot for an AGP Video card of a PCI Express 16X slot for a PCI Video card.
Right now at the moment PCI express 16X cards are bad *** and doinate the video cards. years ago AGP was the thing and there is still Bad *** AGP cards. Im running AGP but if you really want to have the best of the best, go with PCI express 16X.
6 ( COMPUTER TOWER)
Make sure you buy a nice tower that has atleats 5 fans running inside of it at all time and its not cheap. This will keep your system cool so it dont over heat and fry. Very important that there is great air flow in your system when building a computer like this. Also make sure it has a lot of room for all those extras you might want to add.
7 ( POWER SUPPLY )
This is very key, You cannot buy a cheap power supply. Make sure you get something that is no less then 500 watts maybe even more and it must be a good name brands. Some PS companys say they are pushing theire wattage but they arent and this can cause you to fry stuff or not be able to run everything you have added.
Here look for a
( Thermaltake)< > very good but expensive.
( Antec ) < > very good but can be expensive.
8 ( Monitor )
I prefer the old CRT ( Cathrid Ray Tube ) Monitors for gamming.
Unless you go with an awesome flat panel then your not going to get that nice crisp clear look as you do with a CRT moniter. Make sure the CRT is 17 to 19 inches, I dont recommend anything more and the Dot Pitch is atleast 26.
9 ( head set, speakers, mouse and keyboard, soundcard)
Well most important here is the Head set, Mouse and soundcard.
I use a Logitech MX518 and its great and for a head set use a nice head set that completely covers your ears and it MUST be digital.
Soundcard get the newest but not the expensive.
* NOTES * Your system must have all the software that comes with it just incase you need to reinstall anything.
Now as far as all the other goodies that is up to you, but this will give you a good understanding of what you need. here is a few website that I buy computer products from and they are secure and I always get my stuff when ordered on time.
I hope this helps you out man and good luck

When you are choosing a new computer for gaming, must remember to see the following:
- Choose the processor as high speed as possible. The greater speed, the greater gaming performance. The latest Intel or AMD branded processor is recommended.
- If choosing laptop, the laptop must come with ATI or Nvidia branded graphic card (for example ATI Radeon .... , or Nvidia Geforce ....) with at least 128mb video ram. 256 or higher is recommended.
-If choosing Desktop based computer, choose the computer which have PCI Express X16 slot so that you can install ATI or Nvidia branded graphic card if such graphic card is not coming with your computer or the bundled graphic card is integrated. And the graphic card must have at least 128 mb video ram. 256mb or higher is recommended.
-Look at the ram. At least 1gb ram is installed.
-Your computer must have genuine Windows XP Home / Professional edition with service pack 2 or Media center Edition with update rollup 2, or genuine Windows Vista (will be released on 30 Jan 2007) preinstalled.
-An LCD monitor.

You should get a pc with a dual core processor they have two processors in one unit, and a lot of ram helps with those ipods I reccommend at least 512mb of ram and a 2.0gz or faster processer and If you choose to get broadband Internet it will be your fastest and for wifi on your laptop that pc would be good for that. Hope this helps!

Most Pcs come with DVDRW these days, If you are using it for gaming just get the PC where all the numbers are bigger. Higher numbers mean Higher spec.
Get the most expensive you can afford, Alienware make gaming PCs using high end components. http://www.alienware.co.uk

Everybody has an opinion on how to get a new PC.
You should trust market forces and buy from the world's leading PC vendor: Dell.

you'll need a 3 gig processor and 1 gig ddr ram and a 120 gig hard drive. 512 mb graphic card. self build is the best comp you can get. the worst is dell. avoid like the plague. also avoid pc world, they bullshit numbers like they know what they are talking about. phone up a computer builder tell them exactly what your looking for say "a comp capable of playing half life 2 at full res and speed" get them to tell you what you might need and get a quote. say thanks and hang up and go shopping for yourself and build it.

It may be just my opinion, by I love HP's. They are easy to use and have a great back up support system. I have solved all my own 'studid' problems myself and saved tons on computer experts.
I own HP everything, including my remote for the tv.
Just a thought.

I'd suggest getting an Apple iMac. You get all the features you need, you can install Windows if you need to and with Mac OS X you get all the stability and security. No spyware, no viruses, no trojans, no adware.
