Why does LPG gas smell foul ? What is its significance ?

Because of a compound called ethyl mercaptan (C2H5SH), it is mixed in LPG in very small amounts. It is very helpful for detecting gas leaks.

It is actually orderless. The smell is put in by man. That way you know if you have a gas leak.
