a contract between two people that the other comes first in their life. That's why adultry is called cheating.... the other is trying to wiggle out of their word or deal so to speak. You can only love one as a lifetime mate.

You have to decide what it is to you to some extent.

For me, marriage is a commitment 1st and foremost. Marriage is a decision that you make to be committed to another person til death do you part. All of the vows are to be realized as real possibilities before they are said and the commitment to the other person puts them above you to some extent. When you marry you become one with the other person so in that regard you are committing to yourself just as much as you are committing to the other person.

When you decide to marry, you are deciding that you are ready to let go of childish ways and become mature enough to be committed to working through absolutely anything.

When people marry simply because they "love" each other, most people don't understand too that love is a choice. Because love is a feeling to most people, they lack the ability to stay in a marriage when their feelings change.

If you understand love as a choice and marriage as a commitment and your significant other has the same understanding, your marriage is destined to last forever.

Two people who live together and love one another and work towards a common goal. Marriage is just the legal part. This happens inside first though.

It's another way for the government to get into your business. They want to know you have a 'license' to run the business and collect taxes. Then there is the other side......divorce, more money for some legal beagle to grab some more of the 'couples' earning and make everyone's life hell.

So much for that dissertation. My father said,'marriage is a fine institution, for those who wish to be institutionalized.
