I have been living in Japan for 3 years. I have enjoyed it. However, I could never live here forever. One day, I do plan on moving home.

Good luck to you. Take it one step at a time. Make it through one year first. Then think about forever.

I would live in Japan forever if i had a very stable income, I know the language well and my family is over there.
Otherwise, I would rather be a tourist.
As the living standards over there is quite high, i won't be able to survive if i don't have a stable income.
And, most Japanese don't speak English, so i must know Japanese to be able to communicate well with the people. If i can't speak at all, what's the use of me living there forever.
So, I'm sure you must have done some homework before you move there permanently.

I'm doing it! I'm a Filipino-American that has decided to move to, and live in Japan forever. It was a bit easier for me because I have an Asian background so I am able to understand and internalize most of the cultural peculiarities of the Japanese culture. I love it.

If you are from a Western culture ( or you consider yourself to be 100% American or French or whatever, a real American through and through) I can almost guarantee that you will have a tough (but not impossible) transition. You will have to be very flexible and adopt an accepting attitude for you to make the transition go easier.

To be totally honest, I have several friends (British, Australian, American, and Canadian, etc.) that committed to living in Japan, but didn't make it. The longest one was over 10 years, but left none the less. You will have to be aware and accept that things will be different. Especially language wise.

Japan is great, but it is not perfect. Yes, I do love living here but there are things that I don't like, but accept. Once you get here, I would be willing to help you, or answer any questions as an unbiased third party.

Good Luck!

I've been living in Okinawa for almost 3 years and have mixed feelings about it. It is nice to absorb a different culture but I also miss the conveniences of the US. We'll probably be here until 2010 so I guess I just need to accept it. I personally would not live here forever. Maybe mainland but not Okinawa. Too closed in and I get too claustrophobic.

I lived there for about ten years and I seriously considered settling down there. But I made the decision to come back to Canada because of family and the family business. I still miss Japan a lot, but I don't regret returning to Canada. If I had someone I could trust to look after my affairs in Canada, I would consider residing in Japan again. I like onsen, bicycle racing and hole in the wall bars where you can drink all night!

I have visited japan and I loved it. I don't speak the language and that part was a little unnerving. Tokyo is really cool.

My brother is married to a japanese woman and they just had their first child. He seem to like living there and has been there for 4 years. My family misses him and I am sure he misses us.

I hope you love it. It will take time to get used to how things are done. Give it a chance, you will probably like it.

Been there on holidays twice. Good experiences. Guess it would be good to live there for a while but not for forever. May be too fast in the cities and too slow in the outskirts. Nothing is forever because they keep coming out with new ideas......... Good Luck!!

I know someone who lived in Japan for about ten years (he was American) and he lived in Tokyo. He loved the food but he just couldn't handle the fact that it was so crowded. He said the people were really friendly and they complemented you a lot if you said something in Japenese. He said 'hello' one time and the person was like, 'Wow, your Japenese is really good!' and he thought that was just silly because anybody could say 'hello.' But anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay whether just one month or ten!

If I had the opportunity to get a high-paying job, and reside there permanently I would go. I love Japan, but it's not perfect and has flaws just like other countries.
