You'll need more then dumbbells if you really want to get in shape. My gyms now have pay as you go plans. If your not looking for muscle growth then you can do calisthenics at home (push ups, set ups, ect...). You can also buy gym equipment for your home.

Maybe stupid, but when I exercised at home (I finally worked up the courage to join a gym... best thing i ever did in my life) I was using a full water bottle as weights. So while I'd be walking, I'd be lifting the water bottle at the same time, switching arms every so often.

Pick up things that are heavy around your home. Couple of house bricks onthe ends of a wooden broom handle.
