The planets are pulling away from the sun at an equal force to the sun's gravity pulling them towards itself. They travel in an eliptical orbit because the Earth has a velocity in the direction perpendicular to the force of the Sun's pull. If the Sun wasn't there the Earth would travel in a straight line. The gravity of the Sun alters its course, causing it to travel around the Sun, in a shape very near to a circle.
Imagine Superman is standing on Mt. Everest holding a football. He throws it as hard as he can, which is incredibly hard because he's Superman. Just like if you threw a football, eventually it will fall back down and hit the ground. But because he threw it so hard, it goes past the horizon before it can fall. And because the Earth is curved, it just keeps on going, constantly "falling," but not hitting the ground because the ground curves away before it can. Eventually the football will come around and smack Superman in the back of the head, which of course won't hurt him at all because he's Superman. That is how orbits work, but objects like spaceships and moons are much farther from the Earth than the football that Superman threw. This same situation can be applied to the Earth orbiting the Sun - except now Superman is standing on the Sun (which he can do because he's Superman) and he throws the Earth.

The sun's gravitational pull with the planets make their orbits or the path they take. It is like the sun has a string attached to each planet. Each string differ in length so that when stretched the planets will have different orbits to circle on. So that means there will be no planet collisions and I think no one wants that to happen.

its hard to explain on here, let alone for u to understand, but just stay with me...
when the planets formed, they were small rocks called planetesimals and they came from a nebula. which is a huge cloud of dust and gas, the birtplace of stars. and if something disturbs the gravity that keeps this massive, dense cloud in shape, it collapses on itself. therefore exploding and sending all the dust and gas into space
but then it start spinnning and becoming flat. as it spins, the sun starts its nuclear fusion and makes light and heat.
but ultimatley, we orbit the sun because we have force going ==> that way, but the suns gravitational pull is pulling us in.
an example is if ud hav a ball on the end of a rope, the rope is like the suns gravity. if u spin it in a full circle, it orbits ur hand, because the string (gravity) is holding it in orbit. and equalizing the force that wants to continue straight forward.

All planetary bodies have an attraction between them. The gravity of the sun pulls them together and keeps them moving in that orbit.The sun being a star has a larger gravitational pull than other planets like the earth.That is why they say that without the sun, the galaxy would not survive as the planets would move hither thither and crash into each other.

Every thing has an attraction of gravity. eg earth and us.
Even the tides a controlled by the gravitaional pull of the moon the same thing goes with the sun, the planets at pulled aroung by its gravity. hope this helps

it`s because of gravity.
somewhat the sun pull the planets to go at a circular or oval orbit.
nothing else would make the planets go around.

INERTIA
(I know I've said this a loooootttt) When you throw a something in space it will keep going until it is stopped by something. Just like that the planets keep going in their orbit. But the thing we gotta think about is who first made them go in elliptical orbits??
It's definitely INERTIA.
