If it does something, why don't they all use it?

The same reason they dont all use the same helmets or padding or wraps and braces - personal preference

It can help reduce the glare coming off your cheekbones; remember, they're wearing facemasks and cant wipe the sweat off their faces as easily, so it can bead up on your cheekbones and reflect the light of the sun or the floodlights back into your eyes.

It usually probably doesnt matter, but you never want to be the guy that drops a 40 yard pass down the middle because you looked up and back at the ball and squinted when the floodlights flashed in your eyes....

Some people feel it reduces reflected glare in their eyes from the sun or bright stadium lights.

Others simply don't like to use it.

They use it to combat glare f/ the sun or lights, but I played a lot of sports and never had trouble this way. I think they're doing it to look cool.
