Almost everyone in Hollywood then, (and now), participated in same sex liaisons if they wanted a career. The most active and "lucky" actoroids ended up as stars and could then take their pick of other struggling desperadoes.
You may as well ask "was [insert any film star name here] gay?" The answer would still be the same - it's the currency of Hollywood and still holds strong.
James Dean was a very complex character and his sexuality was part of the complexity - I understand that he had a particular penchant for being burned by cigarettes during little intimacies but that's just a bit of salacious gossip for you all!
I hope that you may now take more of an interest in the work of James Dean rather than his private life.

For the most part bisexuality is a sham. Many gay men have a much easier time saying that they like both men and women than admitting to homosexuality. They will even go so far as to be with a woman and to conduct a rather uninspired performance. I've known gay men who've married and had children. It doesn't mean that they were bi, it typically means that they were trying to live up to society's expectations. Some are able to maintain this charade for their entire lives but many end up divorced and becoming who they truly were the entire time. I've seen some candid film footage of James Dean that would certainly appear to support a homosexual tendency. A friend who worked on his estate concurs.

I haven't heard that he was,but if he was,back then it probably wasn't the done thing to advertise it,and especially in the film industry where Dean was seen as a sex symbol and and a very 'male' figure

Yes and he used to hang out in heavy leather bars and especially liked SM like cigarettes being stubbed out on his body.
