Brother, Janome and Husqvana are three of the better brands, stay well away from store brands, they are usually a piece of rubbish.
Toyota machines are also very iffy, better to steer clear of them also.

If your looking at price. I have two Euro-pros from Penney's one I've had for ten years with no problems. We make quilts by the way and, my wife does a lot of sewing, patching as in Blue jeans. We also have a Brother and a singer, a little pricier.
The Euro-Pro for about $220.00 to the brother for about $300.00 you can go to the pricier ones like the Husqvuarna for about $6000.00 if you really had the money to spend.

brother, singer are reasonably priced, we've had these for a while a few different models (sewing and embroidery) ...
janome, husquvarna are pricier .. more metal parts to them but you'll get less options vs the brother.
It depends on how much you're planning to sew, how often and what your projects will be ...
but these are good choices.
