I don't think the melting point is so high. We used to flame iron rods in Woodwork/Metalwork at school and they soon were red hot and bendy. :p We made grapling hooks and stuff to do ninja work.
Other than that i don't know sorry.
Update: if melting point of iron is over 1000 C then maybe we were working with different metal.

Iron, out of the ground, melts at around 1510 degrees C (2750°F). Steel often melts at around 1370 degrees C
