The real (and proper) explanation is Bavarian Motor Works, or in German, it's Bayerische Motoren Werke BUT (and unfortunately) in certain parts of the less civilised parts of the country, it's "Black mans' wheels" - and DON'T start calling me racist - I'm only the messenger ! ! !

Bavarian Motor Works. In German, it's Bayerische Motoren Werke.
The original BMW's were made by British Motor Works, but the company sold out to Germany, who kept the initials/emblem.
British Motor Works only makes Triumph and MG that I'm aware of.
