That, sometimes, can be very difficult. First go up there on a sunny day, and check for chinks or holes that they can get thru. If you see any, try putting some wire over them, and stapling it, so that their entrance is blocked. Then I would recommend putting open boxes of moth balls all back, around the walls of the attic, that repels most rodents. Also you can set traps for them. Also check trees and other things that may overhang the attic and give pests a stairway up, keep them trimmed.
