FRICTION! When the hammer hits the nails it "jolts" the atoms, if you repetidly hit it then it will create energy and in return heat!

the first answer is partially correct but you also need the added friction of the air as the hammer goes thru it.

compression and friction make "Heat energy", Thats why Diesel engines have no spark plugs, the compression is so great in the cylinder that friction occures lighting off the fuel air mix, and this keeps it running.
