A long time ago, I read an article where the author said that a chickens genes come from her dad only, and that a roosters genes come from both of his parents. Is that true?

No. Both chickens and roosters have genes that come from both of their parents.
The biological term for an organism that only has one set of chromosones (or genes) is a monoploid (also called haploid organism, an organism that has two sets of chromosomes is a diploid organism.
You find other animals in nature that has both haploid and diploid organisms. Ants, bees and wasps are examples of this. The queen can lay eggs without being fertilised, these eggs will develop into male workers. Fertilised eggs develops into females. So here you have a system where males only inherits genes from their mother, and females inherits genes from both their parents.
