My guess is excess ammonia build-up in the water.

The white can be an ulcer. look also for red gills!

Goldfish are some of the dirtiest fish in that respect. You need roughly twice the water and filtering per inch of fish for goldfish than tropical fish require. Goldfish however are very hardy when it comes to temperature extremes.

With an open sore and if he is listing or yawing already, he is pretty close to death. he is probably swimming in and breathing ammonia especially if it is a new tank.

Good bacteria need to build up over a period of weeks to months in order to convert the ammonia to less harmful products.

In the short term, dilute with fresh water (no chlorine!) and get to the fish store for proper filter materials. take a sample of the water with you for them to test.

Hi there. I have had a similar problem twice in the past, and after talking with some health care professional(from the website on the fish food tin), they said it was some kind of fungal infection. I was advised to quarantine my fish, and put it in a separate tank with special treatment you can purchase from all good pet stores. Then you must clean out the tank it was in with the other fish, and put a fresh batch of water. ( not normally recommended) but in this case its a must to stop the risk of the bacteria spreading.www.fishdoc.co.uk Hope this helps, Happy Days, Hip

sounds like an ulcer (fish can get these)
symptoms:
*reddened sores of varing sizes on the body of the fish
*sores may appear white in some patches

buy a bacteria control treatment from your local pet store, they can be quite pricey, but are worth it when your little fish gets better

Fish have a 'swimbladder' which keeps them bouyant. When thisstops working, the fish can't swim properly and will get stressed. The stress causes other diseases which will eventually kill. Your fish has fungus. Get him treated quickly and move him out of the tank if poss.
