When people die, I often find only the male kith and kin go to the grave yard for cremation. Women are stayed in the house. Why don't they go to the grave yard until the body is cremated?

The women by and large stayed at home to be with the widow as moral support.
Household chores did require the women to stay back.
It was possibly felt that the women may not be able to witness cremation being emotionally weak.

But these are the things of the past these days even the widow at times is present at the cremation !!

Becasue it is believed spirts of the deceased frequent the grave yard, where their mortal remains rest. These spirits like to enter the body of a weaker person. Women may become easy target and get possessed. It is better to take precautions than to regret later.
Also some women have more attachments with the deceased and they breakdown and make a scene at the graveyard. This makes the spirit of the deceased, difficult to part and go to the world of spirits.

Because Women can't shave their head, as per Hindu theory of evils if you go inside grave yard you may carry one of evil element with you and perception is hairs are the part of body(like antenna) through which evil element can enter ones body.

If you want to shave off your head alongwith men going inside graveyard you can go.
