Some sites are so busy that if all the traffic went there it would bog the server down. One choice is to have several mirrored servers and alternatively direct traffic to each one. This balances the load so you don't kill the server.

I'm guessing that the server the site is on can't always handle the traffic. It then goes to a different mirror page on a different server so that the server load is over two servers.

This means the site is less likely to go down if it gets hit by a lot of traffic or comes uner a DoS attack
