That's the way we do things in this country, same thing happened in Afghanistan. It's called protecting your interests, never mind those same interests end up biting us in the butt. We also installed the Shaw of Iran years ago, that's worked out well, yes?

November 4th, 1979

Iranians assault the US Embassy in Tehran and take as hostages 66 American Diplomats. After a few are released the remaining 53 American Diplomats are held hostage for 444 days. They do not get any 'diplomatic immunity' and they are treated like prisoners of war for the entire 1 and a half years.

Iran-Iraq War breaks out shortly afterwards as Iran calls for Saddam Hussein to be removed from office and both countries begin fighting over who has the oil rights in the region.

Yes, you smell a 'Rat'..... an IRANIAN one that is....

The enemy of my enemy is my buddy. look on the time line. JAN seventy 9...Shah of Iran over thrown, JUL seventy 9....Saddam takes ability in Iraq. Nov seventy 9....Hostages taken in Iran. Dec seventy 9..u.s. invades Afghanistan. summer season 1980 Iraq assaults Iran. the united states of america helped Iraq as a potential of having returned at Iran. yet we actually did not choose Iraq to win the two so we secretly helped Iran. (have faith it or not, Israel helped Iran additionally.) by helping the two aspects, the conflict dragged on for 8 years and neither had the flexibility to reason issues someplace else.. as quickly as the conflict ended, they started meddling in different international locations. What we would desire to continually have achieved is provide each a nuke and the flexibility to grant it to the capital city of the different. think of what number issues that could have solved.

Iran had kidnapped Americans at the embassy. Iran had attacked merchant shipping including US commercial ships.

The US provided aid to Iraq in the war because it befitted the USA. This in no way excuses Iraq and Saddam from attacking Kuwait and from using WMDs on its own people, and from shooting American airecrat or from providing safe harbor and training camps for Al Qaida.

Iraq turned on the USA. Its like your best friend stealing a kiss from your wife. Iraq got punished and deservedly so

The only thing that stinks around here is your logic and your attempt to make it into something it wasn't. We were having major problems with Iran at the time, it was just after the hostage situation, etc. We weren't "chummy" with Saddam. We were simply operating under the old Arab saying "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Read a history book. Our "friendship" with Iraq was expressed with nothing more than a meeting or two, and a vague promise to supply some helicopters... an offer that I believe was rescinded shortly afterward.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend".

Iran took our citizens hostage and public ally gave our country a black eye. Helping Iraq was a way of attacking Iran using non-American troups.

Russia's conflict with Afghanistan also created a need for a "friend", or at least another foothold in the middle east.
